What it does

Ilmversity, in its own words.

AI timetable generator

Conflict-free schedules in seconds, with AI agents handling class allocations and teacher assignments.

Admissions to graduation

Digital applications with configurable steps and verified documents, then student records, exams and reports.

Fees and finance

Vouchers, online payments and real-time tracking, with reminders by notification, SMS and email.

Attendance and communication

One-tap attendance on mobile, biometric devices for staff and students, and parent-teacher messaging.

The decisions that made it work

What was chosen, and what each choice cost.

One connected experience

Academic and administrative workflows share a common platform and data model, instead of separate tools stitched together.

The trade-offA single platform must be reliable for everyone at once, so operational discipline matters more than in a collection of small tools.

Split along pain lines, not domain diagrams

Notifications went first, then reports and exports; everything else stayed together until it earned its independence.

The trade-offThe team ran a mostly monolithic codebase for longer than fashion suggested, in exchange for staying small enough to operate it.

Plan for peak, not average

Scheduled autoscaling, read replicas for reporting, aggressive caching for anything a parent sees, and queues for anything that does not belong in a web request.

The trade-offPre-warming capacity on known academic dates costs money on days that turn out quiet.

Inside Ilmversity

Three parts of the work that each deserve their own look.

The parent and teacher apps

Android and iOS apps bring attendance, diaries, results and school updates to families and teachers. They read and write through the same platform APIs as the web product, with lightweight screens and tolerant retries for the older phones and slow connections many families actually have.

The lessonAccess matters more than polish for this audience. The decisions that held up were the ones made for the slowest connection in the room.

Moving from Linode to AWS

The platform outgrew its first home. We inventoried every job and dependency, moved stateless services first, replicated the database to RDS for days ahead of the cutover, and switched over in the quietest window the academic calendar offered, with no disruption to schools.

The lessonModel the bill before the migration, not after, and build the CI/CD pipelines first rather than alongside it.

Releases, monitoring and team practices

Pipelines from commit to production, structured logging with Prometheus and Grafana, and written operating procedures, so a release is routine and an incident starts with evidence rather than guesswork. Mentoring and reviews grew engineers into technical owners.

The lessonA deploy should be so boring a junior engineer can do it on their first Friday. Getting there is a people project with a tooling component.
